SAREGIO

Toscana Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT Toscana)

100% SANGIOVESE

Saregio demonstrates Sangiovese’s capacity for balance and finesse. Integrating grapes from our oldest Casavecchia vineyard, this wine speaks to the spiritual heart of Tenuta Casucci.

The name ‘Saregio’ was inspired by the solitary ancient cherry tree that stands proudly at the centre of this vineyard. A few enterprising tendrils from the vines have started to entwine the tree, echoing a winemaking technique called ‘la vigna maritata’, pioneered by the Etruscans in this region in pre-Roman times. ‘Saregio’ means ‘cherry tree’ in the Aretine dialect; we rather like the connotations of regio (fem. regia) meaning ‘kingly, royal, regal’, which befit this impressive Sangiovese.

Saregio features an elegant and aromatic profile, while showcasing the classic cherry fruit notes of Sangiovese. Born from the harmony of Tenuta Casucci’s altitude, unique microclimate, and ancient soils, it reveals remarkable complexity and vibrant structure. Carefully crafted to age with depth, Saregio gradually unveils its true character over time.

Ageing is carried out in 20-hectolitre wooden barrels for 18 months. Before release, Saregio is aged for at least 6 months in the bottle.

The 2022 season was marked across the entire region by a prolonged period of intense heat during the early stages of ripening. The altitude and exposure of Tenuta Casucci’s vineyards provided valuable protection against excessive heat and vine stress. These challenging conditions led to unusually early physiological development, while the resilience of the vineyards, combined with some welcome rainfall later in the summer, ensured excellent grape health. The 2022 harvest was among the earliest of recent years. Harvesting was carried out by hand, with careful selection, and the fermentation vats were filled during the coolest hours of the day.
